Twin Towers is one of the largest jail facilities in the world and sits on the same downtown site as the county’s Inmate Reception Center. If someone you know has been moved “downtown” in Los Angeles County, this is usually where they mean. Bail is not posted at Twin Towers itself — it is handled through the Inmate Reception Center on the same site.

Twin Towers, the Inmate Reception Center and Men’s Central

Three names, one downtown site, and the distinction matters when you are trying to get someone out.

• Inmate Reception Center (IRC) — the county’s intake and release hub at the same 450 Bauchet Street address. Bookings are processed here and releases happen here.
• Twin Towers — a housing facility, including the county’s largest mental health housing. People are held here, not released from here.
• Men’s Central Jail — the older adjacent housing facility on Bauchet Street.

So when a bond is posted for someone at Twin Towers, the paperwork and the walk-out both run through the Inmate Reception Center. Expect the release itself to take hours rather than minutes: it is the busiest release counter in the county.

Is there a bail amount at all?

In Los Angeles County that is a real question rather than a formality. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s pre-arraignment release protocols have replaced money bail for a large share of arrests, and the bail schedules mark those offences CR, BR or MR rather than giving a figure.

Someone actually sitting in Twin Towers on a bailable amount is therefore most often in one of the excluded categories — domestic violence, a serious or violent felony, or an offence excluded by the California Constitution — or is being held on a warrant or a hold. State classification: Type II

The California Board of State and Community Corrections classifies this facility as Type II. Under California Code of Regulations, Title 15, § 1006, that means a county jail — used for detention pending arraignment, during trial, and on a sentence of commitment.

2. Get the charge and the bail status. A dollar figure means a bond may be needed; CR, BR or MR usually means it is not.
3. Check for holds. A probation or parole hold, another county’s warrant, or a PC 1275.1 hold will keep someone in custody regardless of what is paid.

Getting there

Twin Towers sits just north of Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, on Bauchet Street off Vignes. Parking around the site is limited and the visitor entrance is not the same as the release door — ask at the information desk which one you need before queueing.
