The Record Disappeared: Released, Transferred, or Something Else?

An inmate search that stops returning a result means one of four things. Only one of them is good news.

You refresh the inmate search and the record is gone. It is tempting to read that as good news. A record disappearing means one of four things, and only one of them is a release.

The four explanations

Released Bail posted, cited out, time served, or the prosecutor declined to file. The good outcome.
Transferred Moved to another facility — extremely common, because a Temporary Holding facility must move someone within 24 hours. See jail transfers and what the classifications mean.
Out to court Transported for a court appearance. The courthouse holding area is a Court Holding facility — court appearance only, not exceeding 12 hours — and the person returns to custody afterwards.
Medical or mental health Moved to a treatment facility. A 5150 hold is a civil detention, and a bail bond does not end it.

How to find out, rather than guess

  1. Call the facility. Custody staff can confirm status. This is the single most reliable step and it costs nothing.
  2. Check the county tool again with exact details — full legal name and date of birth. See Orange County inmate search and LA County inmate search. Los Angeles publishes no record for roughly the first two hours after an arrest, so timing gaps cut both ways.
  3. Ask specifically about holds. A person can be “released” on one case and still held on another — see holds and multiple cases.
  4. If a bond was posted, call the agent. We can see what happened with the bond and often find out faster than a family member calling cold.

If they really were released and still have not called

This worries people more than it should. The usual explanation is mundane: their phone was taken with their property at booking, property windows frequently keep business hours even though releases happen around the clock, and almost nobody remembers phone numbers any more. If a car was towed that night, that is a separate clock running up daily fees — see getting a car back after an arrest.
