La Puente is a small, densely populated city of roughly 30,000 people, almost entirely surrounded by unincorporated Los Angeles County territory — Valinda, Bassett and the areas around Industry press in on nearly every side.

That matters more here than in most places, because it means the boundary between “in the city” and “county territory” is genuinely hard to see from the street. Fortunately, in La Puente’s case it changes less than you might expect.

Who makes the arrest

There is no La Puente Police Department. If you have been told to call one, or found a phone number for one, it does not exist — and it is worth knowing before you waste an hour on it. This city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

La Puente is policed from the Sheriff’s Industry Station, 150 North Hudson Avenue, City of Industry, CA 91744 — (626) 330-3322. The Sheriff lists that station as serving the City of Industry, the City of La Puente, La Habra Heights, Hacienda Heights, Valinda, East and West Valinda, and Bassett/North Whittier.

The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.

Because the Sheriff polices both La Puente itself and the unincorporated land around it from the same station, an arrest either side of the city boundary is generally handled from Industry Station regardless. That removes one of the more common sources of confusion in this part of the county.

Where a La Puente arrest is held, and for how long

The Board of State and Community Corrections classifies the LASD Industry Station Jail (facility 1540) as Type I. Under Title 15 § 1006 that means not more than 96 hours, excluding holidays, after booking. The J suffix is the part almost no bail site explains: it means the facility is separately approved to hold minors, and a minor held there is not in the adult bail system at all — there is usually no bail amount to post.

Los Angeles County sets bail differently — and that changes what you should do first

This is the single most important thing to understand about a La Puente arrest. Los Angeles County releases many non-violent, non-serious arrests before arraignment at $0 bail, with no bond and no premium. It also publishes no inmate record at all for roughly the first two hours after an arrest, so an empty search result usually means the booking is not finished — not that the person was released or taken elsewhere. Paying anyone before you know which category the case falls into is how people spend money they did not need to spend.
