What to Expect at an Orange County or Los Angeles County Courthouse

Security screening, what not to bring, and why arriving on time is not the same as arriving early enough.

Missing a court date because of the security queue counts exactly the same as not turning up. Every courthouse in both counties screens everyone who enters, and there is generally no property storage at the screening point — so an item that cannot come in cannot be left either. People get turned away, walk back to the car, rejoin the queue, and miss their appearance.

Leave these in the car

  • Anything blade-like — knives of any size, scissors, multi-tools, box cutters. A pocket knife you forgot about is the most common single problem.
  • Pepper spray, mace, and anything that could be characterised as a weapon.
  • Tools, including things that are obviously innocent in context.
  • Open drinks and food, depending on the facility.

Phones are generally permitted but must be silenced, and in many courtrooms photography and recording are prohibited entirely. Assume recording is not allowed unless told otherwise.

Time, honestly

Allow far more than the drive. The queue at the entrance can be substantial, particularly on a Monday morning and at the start of a calendar, and parking at several courthouses is genuinely difficult. The realistic advice is to arrive a clear hour before the time on the paperwork. If you are attending an arraignment, note that the calendar may not be called in the order you expect, and that being present when the case is called is the whole point.

Dress and conduct

There is no formal dress code in most courtrooms, but presentation is noticed by the people making decisions. Neat and plain is the right target. Beyond that: silence the phone, do not chew gum, stand when addressing the court, and do not speak while the judge is speaking. If you are a member of the family attending to support someone, sit in the public seating and stay quiet — a supportive presence helps, an audible reaction does not.

Find the right building first

This is where people lose whole mornings. Neither county’s Superior Court publishes a public city-by-city table assigning criminal cases to courthouses, and assignment depends on where the case is filed and the charge ultimately brought. The release paperwork names the courthouse, date and time, and it governs. See understanding your release paperwork and how to find a court date, then confirm the location on our hubs:

If you are going to be late, or cannot attend

Contact the defence lawyer immediately — not the bail agent, and not nobody. A lawyer may be able to address a late arrival with the court. Simply not appearing produces a bench warrant, which does not expire, and starts the bond forfeiture process under Penal Code 1305. See PC 1305 bail forfeiture.
