Long Beach City Jail

Long Beach is the largest city we serve in Los Angeles County and it runs its own police jail, so a Long Beach arrest does not start in Sheriff’s custody. The department publishes its visiting rules in detail, and two of them turn visitors away at the counter: you cannot visit if you have an outstanding warrant, and you cannot visit if you have been in their custody in the last six months.

The visiting rules that catch people out

• Visitors may not have any outstanding warrants, verified through a criminal records check. Turning up at a police jail with a warrant of your own is a bad night for two people instead of one — check first with how to check for a warrant.
• You may not visit if you have been in their custody within the last six months.
• One visitation per inmate per day, and 15 minutes per visitor.
• One child may be admitted with a legal guardian.
• A valid government-issued ID is required.
• A victim of domestic violence may not visit the suspect in the same domestic violence case.
• All jail visitations are subject to cancellation by the Jail Commander or Supervisor.

The department also notes that in-person visits and on-site video appointments at LBPD headquarters have been limited to attorney, doctor and clergy visits. Confirm what is currently running before you travel.

Is a bond even needed for a Long Beach arrest?

Often not. Since 1 October 2023 the county’s pre-arraignment release protocols designate most non-violent, non-serious offences CR, BR or MR — all at $0 bail unless an exception applies. Money bail remains for domestic violence, nearly all serious or violent felonies, and constitutionally excluded offences.

If they are moved

A Long Beach arrest that is not resolved quickly moves into county custody through the Inmate Reception Center at 450 Bauchet Street, with housing at Twin Towers, Men’s Central or Century Regional. The release then happens downtown, not in Long Beach — see jail transfers.

State classification: Type I

The California Board of State and Community Corrections classifies this facility as Type I. Under California Code of Regulations, Title 15, § 1006, that means not more than 96 hours, excluding holidays, after booking.
