Norwalk is the administrative centre of the Southeast District. The Norwalk Courthouse is here, and so is the Sheriff’s station that polices a large slice of the Gateway area. For a lot of Los Angeles County cases we work, this is where things converge.
Who makes the arrest
There is no Norwalk Police Department, and no Norwalk city jail. The city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and what people call the “Norwalk jail” is the Sheriff’s station.
Norwalk is the station city. The Norwalk Sheriff’s Station is here, at 12335 Civic Center Drive, Norwalk, CA 90650 — (562) 863-8711. The Sheriff lists it as serving the City of Norwalk, the City of La Mirada, and South and East Unincorporated Whittier.
That is worth knowing in both directions. If the arrest happened in Norwalk, the station handling it is the one in town. If it happened in La Mirada or in an unincorporated pocket of Whittier, the paperwork still comes here — which is why people are sometimes sent to Norwalk for an arrest that did not happen in Norwalk.
The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.
Do not assume a bond is needed. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanours are cited and released at the scene, or booked and released on their own recognisance, with no money bail at all. Money bail still applies to serious and violent felonies, to arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1. Where someone is held
Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is one reason families are told there is no record of their relative. Men are processed at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles — 24-hour intake (213) 473-6080. Women are held at the Century Regional Detention Facility, 11705 S. Having the courthouse in the city does not mean the jail is. Custody is a county matter here — the courthouse and the facility holding your relative are likely to be a long way apart.

- Felony charges — where the serious-or-violent test decides whether the protocols apply at all.
- DUI, drug charges and misdemeanours — frequently within the protocols, so ask before assuming.

The courthouse is here. Is my relative here?
Almost certainly not. Norwalk has no city jail. Custody runs through the county system — the Inmate Reception Center downtown for men, Century Regional in Lynwood for women. Confirm before you drive.
Do we need a bond?
Often not. Since October 2023 many non-violent, non-serious arrests in Los Angeles County are handled without money bail. We will check what actually applies before you spend anything.
