Los Angeles County city custody
Pomona Police Department Custody
Where a Pomona arrest is held, which courthouse the case goes to, and why many Los Angeles County arrests no longer carry a bail amount at all.
Pomona is policed by its own municipal department rather than the Sheriff, so an arrest here starts at the Pomona Police Department at 490 W. Mission Blvd. What happens next depends heavily on the charge: since 1 October 2023 most non-violent, non-serious arrests in Los Angeles County are released before arraignment at $0 bail, and only the excluded categories still involve a bond.

The department does not publish a bail-acceptance procedure for its facility, so confirm before travelling with a payment — we will not tell you a counter takes bail when the city has not said so.
Is a bond even needed?
Ask this before anything else. Los Angeles County’s pre-arraignment release protocols mark most offences CR (cite and release), BR (book and release) or MR (magistrate review) — all at $0 bail unless an exception applies. Money bail remains for domestic violence, nearly all serious or violent felonies, and constitutionally excluded offences.

Where they go if they are not released
- Booking at the city facility. Nobody can be released until it is finished — see the booking process.
- Transfer to county custody if the case is not resolved quickly. See jail transfers.
- Intake at the Inmate Reception Center, and housing at Twin Towers, Men’s Central or Century Regional.
- Release, always through the IRC — hours rather than minutes.
Pomona sits on the county’s eastern edge
That matters more than it sounds. Pomona borders San Bernardino County, and a person arrested a few miles away can end up in an entirely different county system with different rules — San Bernardino has no equivalent of Los Angeles County’s $0 pre-arraignment release. If you are not certain which county made the arrest, establish that before anything else.
State classification: Type I (juvenile approved)
The California Board of State and Community Corrections classifies this facility as Type I (juvenile approved). Under California Code of Regulations, Title 15, § 1006, that means not more than 96 hours, excluding holidays, after booking.
The classification is the regulatory limit for the building, not a prediction for any individual — but it tells you how much time the situation realistically allows. What kind of jail is holding them? sets out every classification and the class of every facility we cover in both counties.
What to do first
- Confirm which agency has them. A city arrest may not appear in the county system for hours.
- Get the charge, then check whether it is CR, BR, MR or a dollar figure.
- Check for warrants and holds — see warrants and the 1275 hold.
- Call us before paying anyone. If no bond is needed, we will say so.
