Lake Forest is one of the largest cities in south Orange County, with roughly 87,000 residents across the older El Toro area and the newer Foothill Ranch, Portola Hills and Baker Ranch communities.

It also sits closer to a county jail than almost anywhere else in the south county.

The Musick facility is right next door

The James A. Musick Facility is at 13420 Alton Parkway in Irvine, close to the Lake Forest boundary. For many Lake Forest families it is the nearest county facility.

But proximity does not mean that is where someone starts. Most county bookings are processed at the Orange County Intake Release Center at 550 N. Flower Street in Santa Ana, with housing at Musick or Theo Lacy afterwards if the person is not released first. It is worth confirming where the person actually is before driving there.

Who makes the arrest in Lake Forest

Lake Forest contracts its law enforcement to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The Sheriff states it plainly: “Lake Forest contracts with the Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement services.” Several other south county cities are policed the same way, including Mission Viejo; further north, Stanton, Villa Park and Yorba Linda are too.

The Sheriff describes the Lake Forest assignment as five sergeants, thirty-seven deputies, three investigators, an investigative assistant, five community services officers and a crime prevention specialist.

That changes the first few hours. There is no city jail to hold someone in while booking is sorted out. Deputies handle the arrest from the outset, which usually means a more direct route into the county system — typically the Orange County Intake Release Center at 550 N. Flower Street in Santa Ana, with longer-term housing at the James A. Musick Facility in Irvine or Theo Lacy in Orange.

Where a bond can actually be posted for a Lake Forest arrest

Here is the part that matters most given how close Musick is: you cannot post a bond at Musick. The Sheriff’s cashier and bail page lists only two facilities that accept bail, and the nearest county jail to Lake Forest is not one of them.

The Intake Release Center, 550 N. Flower Street, Santa Ana, accepts bonds 24 hours a day on (714) 647-6085. Theo Lacy, 501 The City Drive South, Orange, accepts them daily between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on (714) 935-6905. Accepted forms are cash, bank cashier’s cheques, personal cheques (two forms of identification), money orders and traveller’s cheques, and bail for any court outside Orange County must be paid in cash.

There is also no Lake Forest city jail and no city counter that takes bail, so nothing can be posted locally either. Under Penal Code section 1269b the authority sits with the officer in charge of the facility holding the person — which is why establishing the facility comes first.

How to find someone after a Lake Forest arrest

Because deputies handle the arrest, the county locator is the search path from the outset. Have the full legal name and date of birth ready, and note that a very recent booking may not appear straight away. How bail is set

Under Penal Code section 1269b, the superior court judges of each county must adopt and annually revise a uniform countywide bail schedule, and the officer in charge of the jail where a person is held is among those authorised to approve and accept bail. In practice the amount is frequently fixed before anyone appears in front of a judge. Because that authority sits with the facility, posting on the schedule does not require waiting for a court date. We cannot promise how long any release takes.
