Medication and Medical Care While Someone Is in Custody

The most common urgent question families ask after “where are they” — and one where acting early genuinely matters.

After “where are they”, this is the question we hear most: they need their medication. It is a real concern and it is worth acting on immediately — but not by driving to the jail with a bottle in your hand.

How medication actually works in custody

Custody facilities have medical staff and their own procedures for medication. You generally cannot hand medication over at a counter; facilities do not accept drugs from the public that way, and what a person receives is a decision for facility medical staff based on their assessment.

What genuinely helps is information, early: the condition, the prescribing doctor, the pharmacy, and the medication and dosage. Contact the facility and ask for the medical unit, and follow the process they describe.

Say it at intake if you can

Medical conditions are asked about during booking. Where a person is able to, disclosing a condition — diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions, psychiatric medication, pregnancy — is important. Families who reach the facility early can sometimes get that information in sooner.

When medical issues change the timeline

Medical clearance before booking Treatment comes first, and nothing appears in any search until booking happens afterwards — see medical holds and hospital transfers.
Hospitalised under guard Still in custody. Release logistics run through the custody facility, not the hospital.
Mental health A 5150 is a civil detention that a bail bond does not end — see mental health holds.

What a bail agent can and cannot do here

We have no access to medical information and cannot intervene in care. We can tell you where the person is held, whether a bail amount exists, and whether a hold appears to be in place. For anything medical, the facility’s medical unit is the only useful contact, and for anything about the case, the defence lawyer.

If the concern is urgent, say so plainly when you call the facility rather than waiting for a routine callback.
