Artesia is one of the smallest cities in Los Angeles County by area — a little over a square mile — wrapped almost entirely by Cerritos. It is best known for the Pioneer Boulevard commercial district, one of the largest South Asian business corridors in the United States.

Who makes the arrest
This city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, policed from the Lakewood Station, 5130 Clark Avenue, Lakewood, CA 90712 — (562) 623-3500. The Sheriff lists that station as serving the City of Artesia, the City of Bellflower, the City of Hawaiian Gardens, the City of Lakewood, the City of Paramount, Unincorporated Cerritos and Unincorporated Long Beach.
The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.
Here is the catch: Cerritos, which surrounds Artesia on most sides, is covered by the Sheriff’s Cerritos Station instead. Two adjacent cities, both sheriff-policed, two different stations holding the paperwork. In a city this small it is genuinely easy to be unsure which side of a boundary an arrest happened on — tell us and we will establish it.
Do not assume a bond is needed. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanours are cited and released at the scene, or booked and released on their own recognisance, with no money bail at all. Money bail still applies to serious and violent felonies, to arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1. Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is one reason families are told there is no record of their relative. The Southeast District also includes the Bellflower Courthouse at 10025 E. Flower Street, (562) 345-3300, which has its own criminal clerk’s office. Check the building named on the paperwork rather than assuming, and ask us if it is not clear.
Language
Given the makeup of the Pioneer Boulevard community, a significant share of households here speak a language other than English at home. If that is going to make an already difficult conversation harder, raise it at the start of the call rather than partway through paperwork.

Is Artesia the same station as Cerritos?
No, and it is an easy Artesia mix-up to make. Artesia is covered by the Sheriff’s Lakewood Station; Cerritos by the Cerritos Station. Adjacent cities, different paperwork.
Where is my relative held?
Artesia has no city jail. County custody — Inmate Reception Center for men, Century Regional in Lynwood for women.
Do we need a bond?
Possibly not. LA County’s release protocols cover many non-violent, non-serious cases. We will check what applies before you spend anything.
