Cerritos is one of the few Los Angeles County cities with a Sheriff’s station of its own name serving essentially one city. It sits against the Orange County line, a short distance from our La Habra office.
Who makes the arrest
This city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, policed from the Cerritos Station, 18135 Bloomfield Avenue, Cerritos, CA 90703 — (562) 860-0044.
The Sheriff lists that station as serving one area only: the City of Cerritos. That is the narrowest patch of any station around here, and it creates a distinction worth knowing. There are unincorporated pockets outside the city limits that also carry a Cerritos address, and the Sheriff lists Unincorporated Cerritos under the Lakewood Station instead. So a Cerritos postal address does not settle which station holds the paperwork — whether the arrest happened inside the city limits does. If you are not sure, tell us the street and we will check.
The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.
Neighbouring Artesia, immediately to the north-west, is covered by the Sheriff’s Lakewood Station instead — two adjacent cities, two different stations. If you are unsure which side of the boundary the arrest happened on, say so.
Do not assume a bond is needed. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanours are cited and released at the scene, or booked and released on their own recognisance, with no money bail at all. Money bail still applies to serious and violent felonies, to arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1. Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is one reason families are told there is no record of their relative. The county line
Cerritos borders Orange County. An arrest a short distance south or east — in La Palma, Buena Park or Cypress — is an Orange County matter with a different sheriff, different jails, a different court and a uniform bail schedule under Penal Code section 1269b rather than Los Angeles County’s release protocols. We work both sides daily.

Common questions
Is this an LA County or an Orange County case?
Whichever agency made the arrest decides it. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies from Cerritos Station means an LA County case at Norwalk. A neighbouring Orange County city’s police means a different system entirely. We handle both.
Does the county change whether we need a bond?
Substantially. LA County’s protocols remove money bail from many non-violent, non-serious cases. Orange County still runs a uniform schedule where posting is often the fastest route out.
Where is my relative held?
No city jail in Cerritos. County custody — Inmate Reception Center for men, Century Regional in Lynwood for women.
Is Artesia the same station?
No. Artesia is covered by the Lakewood Station; the City of Cerritos by the Cerritos Station. The two cities are intertwined on the map but sit under different stations — and Unincorporated Cerritos sits under Lakewood as well, which catches people out.
