Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Courthouse

The Los Angeles County children’s courthouse in Monterey Park — and why a minor’s case is not an adult bail case at all.

If a minor is involved, the single most useful thing to understand is that you are probably not in the bail system at all. Juvenile matters in California run under a different statutory scheme from adult criminal cases, and there is usually no bail amount to post — which means there is usually no bond to buy, and anyone trying to sell you one should be treated with suspicion.

Why a minor’s case works differently

Adult pre-trial release turns on a bail amount drawn from the countywide schedule that Penal Code 1269b requires each county’s judges to adopt. Juvenile proceedings do not work that way. Detention decisions are made by the juvenile court under its own statutory framework, on a different timetable and against different criteria, and release is generally to a parent or guardian rather than on a posted bond.

The practical consequence for a parent: the useful calls are to a lawyer who handles juvenile matters and to the facility holding the minor — not to a bail agent. We would rather tell you that plainly than take a call we cannot help with. See can a juvenile get bail in California.

Where a minor may be held

A number of local facilities are separately approved to hold minors, marked with a J in their Board of State and Community Corrections classification — for example Montebello and Pico Rivera Station in this part of the county. That approval concerns the facility, not the process: a minor held in an approved facility is still in the juvenile system. See what the classifications mean.

When an adult bail question does arise

Occasionally a case involving a young person is filed in adult court, and then ordinary adult bail rules apply, including the schedule, the possibility of a bail reduction hearing, and the strike consequences under Penal Code 1192.7(c) and 667.5(c) — see three strikes and bail. Establish which court the case is actually in before assuming either way. The paperwork governs — see understanding your release paperwork.

Getting to the right building

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County publishes no public city-by-city table assigning cases to courthouses, and we will not guess at yours. The paperwork names the courthouse, date and time. Where we work

American Freedom Bail Bonds has no Los Angeles County office. Our three offices are Anaheim, Brea and La Habra, all in Orange County, and we work LA County adult cases from La Habra on the county line.

Please note: American Freedom Bail Bonds is a licensed bail bond agency, not a law firm, and we do not provide juvenile representation. Nothing on this page is legal advice. Juvenile procedure differs materially from adult criminal procedure — consult a lawyer who handles juvenile matters. California bail license 1841014.
