Lakewood is a post-war planned city of roughly 80,000 people between Bellflower, Cerritos and Long Beach. It gives its name to the sheriff’s station that polices a large slice of this corner of the county.
Who makes the arrest
There is no Lakewood Police Department. If you have seen one named online, it does not exist — the city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and what people call the “Lakewood jail” is the Sheriff’s station.
Lakewood is the station city. The Lakewood Sheriff’s Station sits here, at 5130 Clark Avenue, Lakewood, CA 90712 — (562) 623-3500 — and it is the base for a wide patch of the surrounding area, not just for Lakewood. The Sheriff lists it as serving the City of Artesia, the City of Bellflower, the City of Hawaiian Gardens, the City of Lakewood, the City of Paramount, Unincorporated Cerritos and Unincorporated Long Beach.
That last pair matters. A Cerritos or Long Beach address outside those city limits can be handled from Lakewood rather than by that city’s own agency, so the postal address alone does not settle which station holds the paperwork.
The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.
The contrast with its southern neighbour is stark. Long Beach runs its own police department and its own city jail, so a Long Beach arrestee may never enter county custody at all in the first instance. A Lakewood arrestee generally goes straight into the county system. Two adjacent cities, two completely different first stops — and if you are not sure which side of the boundary the arrest happened on, that is the first thing to pin down.
Do not assume a bond is needed. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanours are cited and released at the scene, or booked and released on their own recognisance, with no money bail at all. Money bail still applies to serious and violent felonies, to arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1. Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is one reason families are told there is no record of their relative.
