Buena Park Police Department

Buena Park Police Jail Facility

Booking and custody for Buena Park arrests, on the Orange / Los Angeles county line — our La Habra and Anaheim offices are minutes away

Since 1997CA License 1841014Open 24 HoursNearest office: La Habra

The Buena Park Police Department operates a jail facility with a booking area, and its published policy covers housing arrestees, temporary detainees and release on citation after booking and processing. If someone was arrested in Buena Park tonight, there is a real chance they are still at the station rather than at the county facility — and that distinction decides what you should do next.

What happens at the Buena Park jail facility

The department’s policy describes a jail facility with a booking area, arrangements for housing arrestees and temporary detainees, and release on citation after booking and processing has been completed. In plain terms, that means several different outcomes are possible for someone brought in tonight, and which one applies depends almost entirely on the booking charge.

The policy also references use of the jail sally port for temporary detention during overcrowding. That is a detail most families will never need, but it tells you something useful: capacity at a city facility is finite, and pressure on it is one of the things that can accelerate a transfer to county custody.

How to check whether someone is still there

Call the department on (714) 562-3902 and ask whether the person is still in custody at the station. The department states it is staffed around the clock, so there should be somebody to ask at any hour.

If the person has already been moved, Orange County arrests route into county custody through the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana. The county runs an inmate search requiring a first and last name, and the jail line is (714) 647-7000.

The county-line complication

Buena Park runs right up against the Los Angeles County border. It is an ordinary fact of geography that becomes a real problem at two in the morning, because which side of a street an arrest happened on can decide whether someone enters Orange County custody or Los Angeles County custody — two different systems, two different timetables, two different places to post a bond. LA County arrests route through the Inmate Reception Center for men and the Century Regional Detention Facility for women. We are licensed and working in both counties every day, and our La Habra office sits on that same county line.

What happens after booking

  1. Transport and intake. The person is brought to the station, searched, and property is inventoried.
  2. Booking. Identity, charges, fingerprints, photographs. Until booking finishes, records commonly show nothing — families calling in the first hour are told there is no record. It is normal and does not mean something has gone wrong.
  3. The charge is set. This determines the scheduled bail figure. It is not always the charge described at the scene.
  4. Release on citation, bail, or transfer. Department policy provides for release on citation once booking and processing is complete for qualifying offenses; otherwise the person is bailed out or moved into county custody.

Do not assume a bond is needed

Because the department’s own policy provides for citation release after booking for qualifying offenses, the honest first step is finding out what the booking charge actually is rather than assuming money has to be raised. If a bond is not required, we will tell you that. We would rather give you a straight answer at 2am than sell you something you do not need.

Domestic violence arrests in Buena Park

Domestic violence is the significant exception to most of the above, and the charge type where the rules genuinely differ. Under Penal Code § 1270.1, these offenses require a hearing in open court before release on own recognizance or at any amount other than the published scheduled figure.

In practice: posting the scheduled amount does not require a judge and can proceed at any hour. Asking a judge to reduce it waits for a court day, so a Friday evening arrest can stall into the weekend. Our domestic violence bail page lists current scheduled amounts by charge and explains the protective order that takes effect on release. Charge detail is on PC 273.5, PC 243(e)(1) and PC 273.6.

Other charges we are called about

A large share of our Buena Park calls come from relatives who are not in California at all — the Knott’s Berry Farm and hotel corridor brings a lot of visitors into a relatively small city. We can complete indemnitor paperwork remotely, so nobody has to get on a plane to sign a form.

The 96-hour rule, and why it decides your night

Buena Park’s facility is a Type I jail. Under California Code of Regulations, Title 15, § 1006, a Type I facility is a local detention facility used to hold people for not more than 96 hours, excluding holidays, after booking. That is the classification of the building, not a forecast for any individual — most people leave far sooner, either released or transferred.

The practical consequence is a window. A bond arranged and posted inside it means release from Buena Park rather than a drive to Santa Ana and a much longer queue at the Intake Release Center. Once a transfer starts, the person is briefly on nobody’s roster — see jail transfers.

Working out the bail amount when the county system will not show it

The Orange County Sheriff’s Inmate Information System now requires an account, and the Sheriff states that the current version does not display inmate charges. No charge means no bail figure. Three routes: call the facility directly, call OCSD Inmate Records on (714) 647-4666, or ask a licensed agent — the Sheriff’s own page notes that bail bonds personnel continue to use an existing channel for charge information.

Then read the charge against the schedule: Orange County bail amount lookup, with the full walkthrough at the Orange County bail schedule explained.

Two counties, two systems

Buena Park sits close to the Los Angeles County line, and families frequently search the wrong county’s system for the first hour. Los Angeles County publishes no record at all for the first two hours after a booking, and its schedules mark most offences CR, BR or MR at $0 bail rather than giving a dollar figure. Orange County shows no charges but does run a conventional schedule. Establish the arresting agency first: Orange County inmate search or Los Angeles County inmate search.

Before you drive anywhere

Where the case goes, and when

Criminal cases from Buena Park arrests are heard at the North Justice Center. Arraignment must happen within 48 hours of arrest, excluding Sundays and holidays, under Penal Code § 825 — which is why a Friday night feels so much longer than a Tuesday one. See arraignment.

Where the case will be heard

Buena Park is in north Orange County and criminal matters are associated with the North Justice Center in Fullerton, alongside Anaheim, Brea, Fullerton, La Habra and Placentia. That is what the courthouse handles, not a case assignment — the release paperwork and case record control where a case is actually heard. If the arrest fell on the Los Angeles County side, the case goes into the LA County court system instead.

What we need from you to start

  • The full name of the person arrested, and date of birth if you have it.
  • Roughly where the arrest happened — particularly important here because of the county line.
  • The booking charge if you were told it. If not, we will find it.
  • Details for whoever will sign as indemnitor. This can be handled remotely if you are out of the area.

Nights, weekends and holidays

Arrests cluster in the evenings and at weekends, exactly when courts are closed. Our three offices are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and a licensed agent answers the phone at 3am on a holiday.

Common questions

Does Buena Park Police Department have a jail?

The department’s published policy references a jail facility with a booking area, housing of arrestees and temporary detainees, and release on citation after booking and processing. It is a city facility, not a long-term county jail.

How do I find out if someone is in custody at Buena Park PD?

Call (714) 562-3902. The department states it is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If the person has been transferred, the Orange County Jail line is (714) 647-7000.

Is Buena Park in Orange County or Los Angeles County?

Buena Park is in Orange County, but it borders Los Angeles County directly. Depending on exactly where an arrest happened, custody can run through either county’s system.

Can someone be released without posting bail?

For qualifying offenses, department policy provides for release on citation once booking and processing is complete. Whether that applies depends on the booking charge, which is why establishing the charge is the first useful step.

There is no record of the person. What does that mean?

Usually booking has not finished. Records typically appear only once the process is complete, which can take a few hours.

Where we work from

We also serve Buena Park, Fullerton, La Palma and Cypress, and cover Los Angeles County on the other side of the line.
