Orange County city custody
Seal Beach City Jail
A Temporary Holding facility with a 24-hour window — and a Pay to Stay programme that is a completely separate thing from bail.
Seal Beach runs a small city jail that does two very different jobs, and confusing them costs people money. As a Temporary Holding facility it holds people arrested in Seal Beach for 24 hours or less before release or transfer. Separately, its Detention Center operates a Pay to Stay and Work Furlough programme for people already sentenced by a court. If someone has just been arrested, the second one is not relevant to you.

Pay to Stay is not bail — and the difference matters
This is the single most useful distinction on this page, because the two get mixed up constantly.
- Bail happens before a case is decided. It secures release from custody while the case is pending, and it is what a bail bond is for. Nothing on this page changes that.
- Pay to Stay / Work Furlough happens after a court has sentenced someone. The City describes it as a programme for citizens who have been sentenced by the court and are allowed to serve their time in a city jail. It is a sentencing option arranged through the court and the programme, not something a bail agency provides.
If your family member has just been arrested, you are in the first category. If they have been sentenced and are asking about serving time locally, that is a conversation with their defence lawyer and the programme — not with us, and we will say so rather than take a fee.
If the arrest is recent
- Confirm they are still there. Twenty-four hours is the outside limit, so a transfer may already have happened — see jail transfers.
- Get the charge. The county system requires an account and does not display charges; call the department, OCSD Inmate Records on (714) 647-4666, or us.
- Work out the figure with Orange County bail amount lookup.
- Check for holds — how to check for a warrant.
Questions we get asked most
How long can Seal Beach hold someone?
The detention centre is classified as a Temporary Holding facility, which under Title 15 § 1006 means 24 hours or less pending release, transfer or a court appearance.
What is the Seal Beach Pay to Stay programme?
A programme the City describes as being for citizens who have been sentenced by the court and are allowed to serve their time in a city jail. It applies after sentencing and is unrelated to bail.
Can I use Pay to Stay instead of posting bail?
No. Bail secures release before a case is decided; Pay to Stay applies to a sentence already imposed. They are different stages of a case entirely.
Which courthouse hears Seal Beach cases?
The Stephen K. Tamura West Justice Center in Westminster.
