Walnut is a quiet residential city of roughly 28,000 people in the eastern San Gabriel Valley, between Diamond Bar, Rowland Heights and the City of Industry.

It gives its name to the sheriff’s station that covers this corner of the county — which is a useful thing to know, because two of its neighbors are covered by that same station while a third is not.

Who makes the arrest

Walnut has no police department of its own. It contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station is physically here in Walnut, at 21695 E. Valley Boulevard, CA 91789 — so for a Walnut arrest the station handling it is the one down the road.

The Sheriff lists that station as serving the City of Walnut, the City of Diamond Bar, Rowland Heights, and the unincorporated areas of Covina Hill and West Covina. It publishes two lines: Walnut (909) 595-2264 and Diamond Bar (626) 913-1715.

The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.

Neighboring La Puente and Hacienda Heights, just to the west, are covered by the Sheriff’s Industry Station instead. If you are not certain which side of that boundary the arrest happened on, say so — it decides which station holds the paperwork.

The Board of State and Community Corrections classifies the LASD Walnut Station Jail (facility 1850) as Type I. Under Title 15 § 1006 that means not more than 96 hours, excluding holidays, after booking. The J suffix is the part almost no bail site explains: it means the facility is separately approved to hold minors, and a minor held there is not in the adult bail system at all — there is usually no bail amount to post.

Los Angeles County sets bail differently — and that changes what you should do first

This is the single most important thing to understand about a Walnut arrest. Los Angeles County releases many non-violent, non-serious arrests before arraignment at $0 bail, with no bond and no premium. It also publishes no inmate record at all for roughly the first two hours after an arrest, so an empty search result usually means the booking is not finished — not that the person was released or taken elsewhere.
