Placentia Temporary Holding Facility

Booking and up to 24 hours of temporary custody — then transport to Orange County Jail. Our Brea office is minutes away

Since 1997CA License 1841014Open 24 HoursNearest office: Brea

The Placentia Police Department runs a Temporary Holding Facility, and the word that matters most in that phrase is temporary. It is certified to hold arrestees for up to 24 hours. After booking, people are normally transported to Orange County Jail for housing — which means the window in which acting is easiest can close while a family is still trying to work out where their relative is.

These details come from the Placentia Police Department’s own published policy and reporting. We are a bail agency, not the police department, and procedures change — call the department directly, or call us and we will make the calls for you.

What a 24-hour holding facility means for you

A temporary holding facility is built to process people, not to house them. Placentia’s is certified for up to 24 hours, with four holding cells and a sobering cell. Inside that window, one of a few things happens: the person is released, they are cited out, or they are transported to Orange County Jail.

That last outcome is the one worth planning around. Once someone has been moved into county custody through the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana, you are dealing with a far larger operation on its own timetable, and the release process effectively restarts. Acting while somebody is still in Placentia is almost always faster.

We will not promise you a release time, because nobody honestly can. Once a bond is posted the remaining wait is the facility’s own processing queue, and that varies with the hour and how busy the shift has been. What we can do is establish where the person is and what they are booked on, free, usually within minutes.

How to check whether someone is still in Placentia

Call the police department on (714) 993-8164 ext. 1 and ask whether the person is still in custody at the station. If they have already been transported, the county operates an inmate search that needs a first and last name, and the Orange County Jail line is (714) 647-7000.

If you are not sure whether the arrest even happened in Placentia, tell us roughly where it took place. Placentia borders Yorba Linda, Anaheim, Fullerton and Brea, and a few streets in either direction changes which agency made the arrest and which building the person is sitting in.

What happens after booking

  1. Transport and intake. The person is brought to the station, searched, and property is inventoried.
  2. Booking. Identity, charges, fingerprints, photographs. Until booking finishes, records commonly show nothing at all — which is why families calling in the first hour are told there is no record and understandably panic. It is normal.
  3. The charge is set. This determines the scheduled bail figure. It is not always the charge described at the scene, and not always what you were told on the phone.
  4. Release, citation, or transport to county. Within the 24-hour window, one of these happens.

Domestic violence arrests in Placentia

Domestic violence is where the rules genuinely differ, and a short holding window does not change that. Under Penal Code § 1270.1, these offenses require a hearing in open court before release on own recognizance or at any amount other than the published scheduled figure.

In practice: posting the scheduled amount does not require a judge and can proceed at any hour. Asking a judge to reduce it waits for a court day, so a Friday evening arrest can stall into the weekend even though the person may have been moved to county custody long before then. Our domestic violence bail page lists the current scheduled amounts by charge and explains the protective order that begins the moment someone is released. Charge detail is on PC 273.5, PC 243(e)(1) and PC 273.6.

Other charges we are called about

  • DUI — the sobering cell exists for a reason, and these arrests cluster in exactly the hours when courts are closed.
  • Warrants and failures to appear — arranging the bond before surrendering is almost always the better order of operations.
  • Felony and misdemeanor bail, including PC 1275.1 source-of-funds reviews on larger bonds.
  • Drug charges.

How long Placentia can hold someone

We will be precise rather than convenient here. Placentia does not appear on the Board of State and Community Corrections list of local detention facilities, which covers every Type I, Type II, Temporary Holding and Court Holding facility in California. That means we will not tell you a regulatory maximum for it, because there is no published classification we can point to.

What we can say is what the department itself describes and what we see in practice: the window is short, and people are either released or moved into county custody quickly. Treat it as a matter of hours, and confirm directly with the department rather than relying on any website.

The practical consequence is a window. A bond arranged and posted inside it means release from Placentia rather than a drive to Santa Ana and a much longer queue at the Intake Release Center. Once a transfer starts, the person is briefly on nobody’s roster — see jail transfers.

Working out the bail amount when the county system will not show it

The Orange County Sheriff’s Inmate Information System now requires an account, and the Sheriff states that the current version does not display inmate charges. No charge means no bail figure. Three routes: call the facility directly, call OCSD Inmate Records on (714) 647-4666, or ask a licensed agent — the Sheriff’s own page notes that bail bonds personnel continue to use an existing channel for charge information.

Then read the charge against the schedule: Orange County bail amount lookup, with the full walkthrough at the Orange County bail schedule explained.

A holding facility is not a jail you wait outside

Placentia operates a temporary holding facility rather than a long-stay jail, which means the transfer window is short and the useful work happens on the phone rather than in a car park. Confirm the charge, check for holds, and have the bond ready — then the release is not waiting on anything you control. If the transfer to county custody has already happened, switch to the county inmate search and the Intake Release Center.

Before you drive anywhere

Where the case goes, and when

Criminal cases from Placentia arrests are heard at the North Justice Center. Arraignment must happen within 48 hours of arrest, excluding Sundays and holidays, under Penal Code § 825 — which is why a Friday night feels so much longer than a Tuesday one. See arraignment.

Where the case will be heard

Placentia is in north Orange County, and criminal matters from the city are associated with the North Justice Center in Fullerton, which also covers Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra and Yorba Linda. That is what the courthouse handles, not a case assignment — the release paperwork and case record control where a case is actually heard.

The holding facility and the courthouse are two different buildings and two separate journeys. Confirm where the person actually is before anyone drives anywhere.

What we need from you to start

  • The full name of the person arrested, and date of birth if you have it.
  • Roughly where the arrest happened, so we can confirm the agency.
  • The booking charge if you were told it. If not, we will find it.
  • Details for whoever will sign as indemnitor — identification and something showing stable local ties such as employment or residence.

Nights, weekends and holidays

Arrests cluster in the evenings and at weekends, exactly when courts are closed. Our offices are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and a licensed agent answers the phone at 3am on a holiday. With a 24-hour holding window and a likely transfer at the end of it, being able to reach somebody immediately genuinely matters here.

Common questions

How long can someone be held at the Placentia police station?

The facility is certified to hold arrestees for up to 24 hours. Within that window the person may be released, cited out, or transported to Orange County Jail for housing.

How do I find out if someone is still at Placentia PD?

Call the police department non-emergency line on (714) 993-8164 ext. 1. If the person has been transported, the Orange County Jail line is (714) 647-7000 and the county runs an online inmate search.

Where do Placentia arrestees go after booking?

Normally to Orange County Jail for housing, routed through the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana.

Is there any advantage to acting before the transfer?

Usually yes. Once someone is in the county system the process restarts inside a much busier facility. That is not a guarantee of a faster release, but it is consistently the better window.

There is no record of the person. What does that mean?

Usually booking has not finished. Records typically appear only once booking is complete. It is frightening but it is normal.
