What a Type I facility and the 96-hour limit mean for you

California classifies local detention facilities through the Board of State and Community Corrections. A Type I facility is authorised to hold an adult for no more than 96 hours after booking, excluding holidays. It is built for people awaiting release, transfer or a first court appearance — not for serving a sentence.
