Which Orange County courthouse hears a case depends on where the arrest happened. The Superior Court of California, County of Orange operates several justice centers, and criminal and traffic matters are assigned by city.

What every Orange County justice center has in common

• Full security screening. Every justice center requires you to pass through a weapons screening device, with hand-carried items x-rayed.
• Leave these in the car. Knives of any kind including pocket knives, scissors, corkscrews, mace, pepper spray and knitting needles are all prohibited.
• Criminal and traffic hours are generally Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Arrive early. Screening queues at the busier centers can take longer than people expect.

If someone is still in custody

A courthouse is where the case goes; it is not where someone is held immediately after arrest. That is usually a city police facility first, then the Orange County Sheriff’s Department system. Working out which is free and takes a few minutes.

How courthouse assignment actually works — and its limits

We want to be straight about this, because a lot of bail websites state city-to-courthouse assignments as though they were fixed law. They are not. The Superior Court does not publish a public city-by-city criminal case assignment table, and assignment can change with case type, filing decisions and the court’s own scheduling.

What follows below is the pattern we see in practice from the arrests we handle. Treat it as a strong guide, not a guarantee. The authoritative answer for any specific case is on the release paperwork, which names the courthouse and the date — keep it. If you do not have it, the case number and the court’s own case access service will tell you, and we will look it up with you.

Two cities sit right on a boundary in practice: Costa Mesa and Newport Beach are both close to the Harbor Justice Center, while Costa Mesa is also close to the West Justice Center’s area. Where we have referred to a courthouse on a city or facility page, read it as the usual routing rather than a rule.
