Court Interpreters: Asking for One, and Why It Matters
Language should never be the reason someone misunderstands a court date or a release condition.
A large share of the avoidable problems we see trace back to one thing: somebody did not fully understand a document or an instruction. In Orange and Los Angeles County that is often a language question — and it is fixable.
Ask the court early
California courts provide interpreter services. The practical advice is simple: request an interpreter from the court as early as possible, not on the morning of the hearing. The defence lawyer can make the request, and where counsel has been appointed under Penal Code 987 that is part of what they handle — see how to get a public defender.
Why a relative should not interpret
Court interpreting is a skilled role with specific vocabulary, and courts use qualified interpreters for good reason. A well-meaning family member will usually manage the conversation and then get one detail wrong — and the details that go wrong are precisely the consequential ones: the date, the courthouse, and the conditions of release.
The two documents that must be understood
- The release paperwork, which controls the court date, time and courthouse — see understanding your release paperwork. A misread date produces a bench warrant, and a bench warrant does not expire — see failure to appear.
- Any protective order or release condition. A stay-away condition that is not understood is still binding, and breaching it is a fresh offence — see conditions of release and violating a court order.
Practical points for the courthouse
Allow extra time: interpreted matters can be called on their own schedule, and every justice center is a full security facility with screening at the entrance — see what to expect at court. If a date has moved, confirm it properly rather than relying on a relayed message — see when the court date changes.
On our side
Our agents assist in English and Spanish, which is separate from court interpreting. We can explain how bail works in either language; we cannot interpret for the court, and we are not a substitute for a lawyer.
