La Puente is a small, densely populated city of roughly 30,000 people, almost entirely surrounded by unincorporated Los Angeles County territory — Valinda, Bassett and the areas around Industry press in on nearly every side.
That matters more here than in most places, because it means the boundary between “in the city” and “county territory” is genuinely hard to see from the street. Fortunately, in La Puente’s case it changes less than you might expect.
Who makes the arrest
This city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, policed from the Sheriff’s Industry Station, which also covers the City of Industry, La Habra Heights, Hacienda Heights, and the Valinda and Bassett/North Whittier areas.
The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.
Because the Sheriff polices both La Puente itself and the unincorporated land around it from the same station, an arrest either side of the city boundary is generally handled from Industry Station regardless. That removes one of the more common sources of confusion in this part of the county.
Do not assume a bond is needed. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanours are cited and released at the scene, or booked and released on their own recognisance, with no money bail at all. Money bail still applies to serious and violent felonies, to arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1. Our Los Angeles County guide explains it in full — and if you do not need us, we will tell you.
Where someone is held
Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is the single most common reason families here are told there is no record of their relative. Men are processed at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles — 24-hour intake (213) 473-6080. Women are held at the Century Regional Detention Facility, 11705 S. Alameda Street, Lynwood — (323) 568-4500.
Which courthouse
- Superior Court of Los Angeles County, East District
- District courthouses: West Covina, Pomona South and El Monte
Confirm the specific courthouse against your paperwork before travelling, or ask us to check. Note that traffic matters moved from West Covina to El Monte in January 2025 — criminal matters did not.
Our nearest office to La Puente
American Freedom Bail Bonds has no Los Angeles County office. Our three physical offices are Anaheim, Brea and La Habra, all in Orange County. La Puente is a service area we cover from our La Habra office, which sits directly on the county line.
Paperwork can be completed electronically and posting happens at whichever facility holds the person, so an agent can meet you at the courthouse or the jail without you coming to an office first.
Charges we are called about
- Warrants — in Los Angeles County this is now the most common reason a bond is genuinely required, because the release protocols address arrest without a warrant.
- Domestic violence — Penal Code section 1270.1 requires a hearing in open court, on two court days’ written notice, before release on own recognisance or at a non-schedule amount for certain of these charges.
- Felony charges — where the serious-or-violent test decides whether the protocols apply at all.
- DUI, drug charges and misdemeanours — frequently within the protocols, so ask before assuming.
- All bail services and payment plans.
Nearby areas we serve
- Hacienda Heights — to the south, same Industry Station
- West Covina — to the north, own police department
- Walnut — to the east, a different sheriff’s station
- Whittier — to the south-west, own police department and jail

Common questions
Was the arrest in La Puente or in county territory?
Harder to tell than you would think, given how the boundaries run — but in this case it matters less, because Industry Station covers both. Tell us roughly where it happened and we will confirm.
Where is my relative held?
La Puente has no city jail. County custody — the Inmate Reception Center for men, Century Regional in Lynwood for women.
Do we need a bail bond?
Possibly not. Los Angeles County’s release protocols cover many non-violent, non-serious cases. We check before you spend anything.
