Who makes the arrest
This city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, policed from the Sheriff’s Lakewood Station, which also covers Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood and Paramount.
The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.
That puts Bellflower in a different position from neighbouring Downey, which runs its own police department and holds people locally during booking. In Bellflower the route runs into county custody from the outset.
Do not assume a bond is needed. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanours are cited and released at the scene, or booked and released on their own recognisance, with no money bail at all. Money bail still applies to serious and violent felonies, to arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1. Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is the single most common reason families here are told there is no record of their relative. Why is there no Bellflower police station holding him?
Because Bellflower contracts policing to the Los Angeles County Sheriff, from the Lakewood Station, and runs no city jail. Expect county custody.
Where should I look?
The Inmate Reception Center downtown for men, Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood for women. Never assume both are the same place — they are not.
Do we need a bail bond?
