Norwalk is the administrative centre of the Southeast District. The Norwalk Courthouse is here, and so is the Sheriff’s station that polices a large slice of the Gateway area. For a lot of Los Angeles County cases we work, this is where things converge.

Who makes the arrest

There is no Norwalk Police Department, and no Norwalk city jail. The city contracts its law enforcement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and what people call the “Norwalk jail” is the Sheriff’s station.

Norwalk is the station city. The Norwalk Sheriff’s Station is here, at 12335 Civic Center Drive, Norwalk, CA 90650 — (562) 863-8711. The Sheriff lists it as serving the City of Norwalk, the City of La Mirada, and South and East Unincorporated Whittier.

That is worth knowing in both directions. If the arrest happened in Norwalk, the station handling it is the one in town. If it happened in La Mirada or in an unincorporated pocket of Whittier, the paperwork still comes here — which is why people are sometimes sent to Norwalk for an arrest that did not happen in Norwalk.

The Sheriff provides patrol services to 153 unincorporated communities and 42 of the county’s 88 cities. There is no city jail here, so deputies handle the arrest from the outset and the route runs into county custody.

Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is one reason families are told there is no record of their relative. Having the courthouse in the city does not mean the jail is. Custody is a county matter here — the courthouse and the facility holding your relative are likely to be a long way apart.

Where a Norwalk arrest is held, and for how long

The Board of State and Community Corrections classifies the LASD Norwalk Station Jail (facility 1740) as Type I. Under Title 15 § 1006 that means not more than 96 hours, excluding holidays, after booking. The J suffix is the part almost no bail site explains: it means the facility is separately approved to hold minors, and a minor held there is not in the adult bail system at all — there is usually no bail amount to post.

Los Angeles County sets bail differently — and that changes what you should do first

This is the single most important thing to understand about a Norwalk arrest. Los Angeles County releases many non-violent, non-serious arrests before arraignment at $0 bail, with no bond and no premium. It also publishes no inmate record at all for roughly the first two hours after an arrest, so an empty search result usually means the booking is not finished — not that the person was released or taken elsewhere. Paying anyone before you know which category the case falls into is how people spend money they did not need to spend.
