Inmate Reception Center — Los Angeles
Central booking for men in the Los Angeles County jail system
The Inmate Reception Center is the front door to the Los Angeles County jail system for men. The Sheriff’s Department describes it as the central control for processing male prisoners, and states that it has functional supervision over the reception unit at the Century Regional Detention Facility, the booking function at the LAC/USC Medical Center jail wards, and the booking functions at all Sheriff’s facilities.
In plain terms: if a man has been arrested anywhere in Los Angeles County by the Sheriff or by many municipal agencies, this is usually where he ends up being processed — regardless of which city the arrest happened in.
Key details
- Inmate Reception Center (IRC) — within the Men’s Central Jail and Twin Towers Correctional Facility complex, downtown Los Angeles
- Inmate information service and intake, 24 hours: (213) 473-6080
- Administration: (213) 893-5100
- Holds male prisoners. Women go to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood instead.
Before you drive downtown: since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanors are released at the scene or on their own recognizance without money bail. Confirm what is actually happening before making the trip. Our Los Angeles County guide explains the protocols.
Finding someone in the system
The Sheriff’s Department operates a public inmate information service and a booking log. Intake and processing take time, and a person who was arrested very recently may not appear immediately — which is not, by itself, a sign that anything has gone wrong.
If you are calling us, the useful details are the full name, the approximate date and time of arrest, and the city where it happened. From that we can usually establish which facility holds the person and what release terms apply.
What the Inmate Reception Center actually is
The Inmate Reception Center — almost always just called the IRC — is the intake and processing center for the Los Angeles County jail system. It is not a courthouse, it is not a long-term jail, and it is not where most people stay. It is the door everyone comes through.
The Sheriff’s Department’s Custody Operations division is responsible for running the county jail system and for the care, custody, security and rehabilitation of all sentenced and pretrial incarcerated people in its facilities. The IRC is where that process begins: identification, records checks, medical screening, classification, and the decision about which facility someone is housed in next.
Two practical consequences follow. First, a person who was arrested an hour ago is probably at the IRC but not yet in the system — see the two-hour rule below. Second, where they end up tomorrow is usually not where they are tonight.
Address and the numbers that actually get answered
| Detail | |
|---|---|
| Address | 450 Bauchet Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 |
| 24-hour inmate information service / intake | (213) 473-6100 |
| 24-hour inmate information service / intake (alternate) | (213) 473-6080 |
| General custody questions and help locating someone | (213) 473-6100 |
| Medical command center — healthcare concerns needing immediate attention | (213) 893-5544 |
The inmate information line runs around the clock, which matters because arrests do not keep office hours. If the concern is medical rather than procedural, the command center number above is the one to use — the general line will not resolve an urgent health issue.
The two-hour rule — why you cannot find them yet
This single fact accounts for most of the panicked calls we take at 1am. A family searches, finds nothing, assumes the worst, and starts calling hospitals. In reality the booking simply has not propagated yet. The other common cause is a name mismatch — the inmate finder needs the name and date of birth as they appear on identification, not a nickname or a shortened first name.
Give it time, search again, and call the information line if it still comes up empty after a couple of hours.
Where someone goes after the IRC
The IRC is a starting point. The Sheriff’s Department operates several distinct Los Angeles County facilities, and the confusion between them costs families entire evenings:
- Twin Towers Correctional Facility and Men’s Central Jail — the downtown housing facilities for men, adjacent to the IRC.
- Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood — where women in Los Angeles County custody are held. Women are not housed at the IRC.
- Pitchess Detention Centers in Castaic — north county housing.
- Los Angeles General Medical Center — for those requiring hospital-level care.
- Station jails — the local sheriff’s station where an arrest began, before transfer. Our Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Industry and Walnut/Diamond Bar pages cover the stations nearest us.
Confirm the current facility before traveling anywhere. A bond has to be posted where the person actually is, and someone mid-transfer can briefly appear to be in neither place.

How bail works once someone is here
Los Angeles County still publishes felony, misdemeanor and infraction bail schedules. The court describes them as determining the circumstances in which a person arrested without a warrant may be released before appearing in court. Money bail remains relevant for serious and violent felonies, for arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1.
Where we work
American Freedom Bail Bonds has no Los Angeles County office. Our three physical offices are Anaheim, Brea and La Habra, all in Orange County. Our our bail bonds office in La Habra sits on the county line and is where we work Los Angeles County cases from. Paperwork can be completed electronically and posting happens at the facility holding the person.
The rest of the downtown complex
The IRC shares its site with two large housing facilities: Twin Towers at 450 Bauchet Street and Men’s Central Jail at 441 Bauchet Street. People are held there; releases are processed here.
State classification: Type II
The California Board of State and Community Corrections classifies this facility as Type II. Under California Code of Regulations, Title 15, § 1006, that means a county jail — used for detention pending arraignment, during trial, and on a sentence of commitment.
The classification is the regulatory limit for the building, not a prediction for any individual — but it tells you how much time the situation realistically allows. What kind of jail is holding them? sets out every classification and the class of every facility we cover in both counties.

What we are usually called about at the IRC
The Inmate Reception Center is the entry point for Los Angeles County custody, and it runs on its own timetable. Two things decide how your night goes: what the booking charge is, and whether a transfer is still in progress.
- Domestic violence bail. Under Penal Code § 1270.1 these offenses require a hearing in open court before release at anything other than the scheduled amount — the rule applies statewide, not just in Orange County.
- Felony bail and PC 1275.1 source-of-funds reviews.
- Warrants, DUI and drug charges.
We post bail across Los Angeles County as well as Orange County. Our offices are in La Habra, right on the county line, plus Brea and Anaheim — all open 24 hours. If the arrest happened in La Mirada, Whittier, Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights or La Puente, we are close by. See our Los Angeles County bail bonds page for the wider picture.
