Cypress sits in the north-west corner of Orange County, pressed against the Los Angeles County line. Lakewood, Cerritos and Long Beach begin within a short drive. Two things about that location catch people out.

First, the county line. An arrest a few blocks west of the city boundary is a Los Angeles County matter — different sheriff, different jail system, different courthouse, and a separate countywide bail schedule.

Second, the courthouse. Cypress is in the north of the county geographically, but it is not a North Justice Center city. Cypress cases go west, to the West Justice Center in Westminster. Neighbouring La Palma, barely two miles away, goes to Fullerton instead. Two adjacent small cities, two different courthouses.

Cypress operates its own municipal police force. The Cypress Police Department is at 5275 Orange Avenue, Cypress, CA 90630, with a published non-emergency line of (714) 229-6600.

The city is home to Cypress College and the Los Alamitos Race Course, and the 605 and 22 freeways run along its edges — all of which shape where arrests tend to happen.

Where someone is held

Short-term holding at the police department during booking, then typically into county custody at the Orange County Intake Release Center in Santa Ana, with later housing at Theo Lacy or Musick if release has not happened first.

Under Penal Code section 1269b, each county’s superior court judges adopt and annually revise a uniform countywide bail schedule and the officer in charge of the jail may approve and accept bail. Note countywide: Orange and Los Angeles counties maintain separate schedules, so the same conduct can carry a different scheduled amount either side of the line.

Common questions

How do I know if this is an Orange County or an LA County case?

Which agency made the arrest is the strongest clue. Cypress Police Department means Orange County. Los Angeles County Sheriff, or Lakewood, Cerritos or Long Beach authorities, means LA County. We can usually establish it in a couple of minutes.

Why is the case in Westminster and not Fullerton?

Because the court assigns Cypress to the West Justice Center. Geography in the north of the county does not decide it — the court’s own city list does, and Cypress is on the west list.

Does the bail amount change by county?

It can. Penal Code section 1269b requires each county to maintain its own uniform countywide schedule, and Orange and Los Angeles counties set theirs separately.
