Whittier is the most self-contained city in the part of Los Angeles County we work. It has its own police department, its own jail, and the courthouse for its district sits inside the city limits. Almost nowhere else in our LA footprint can say all three.

Who makes the arrest in Whittier
The Whittier Police Department is at 13200 Penn Street, Whittier, CA 90602, on (562) 567-9200. Most of the cities around Whittier contract policing to the Los Angeles County Sheriff. Whittier does not — it runs its own force.
Whittier runs its own jail
The department operates a Type I jail facility at the same Penn Street address, with published bed space for 22 males and 9 females. The jail line is (562) 567-9220.
The practical consequence is significant: a Whittier arrestee may be held here rather than entering Los Angeles County custody at all in the first instance. Families who assume everyone in LA County ends up downtown often start in the wrong place. For Whittier, we check the city jail first.
Do not assume a bond is needed. Since 1 October 2023 the Superior Court’s Pre-Arraignment Release Protocols mean many people arrested in Los Angeles County for non-violent, non-serious felonies and misdemeanours are cited and released at the scene, or booked and released on their own recognisance, with no money bail at all. Money bail still applies to serious and violent felonies, to arrests on a warrant, where a judge sets or increases bail under Penal Code sections 1269c or 1270.1, and where the court restricts the source of bail under Penal Code section 1275.1. Whittier also polices Santa Fe Springs
Unusually, the neighbouring city of Santa Fe Springs contracts its police services to the Whittier Police Department rather than to the Sheriff. So a Santa Fe Springs arrest is handled by Whittier officers — and may be held in the Whittier jail. If you are calling about either city, that connection is worth knowing.

Los Angeles County books men and women into different facilities, which is the single most common reason families here are told there is no record of their relative. Men are processed at the Inmate Reception Center in downtown Los Angeles — 24-hour intake (213) 473-6080. Women are held at the Century Regional Detention Facility, 11705 S. - Domestic violence — Penal Code section 1270.1 requires a hearing in open court, on two court days’ written notice, before release on own recognisance or at a non-schedule amount for certain of these charges. That is state law and applies here as everywhere in California.
- Felony charges — where the serious-or-violent test decides whether the protocols apply at all.
- DUI, drug charges and misdemeanours — frequently within the protocols, so ask before assuming.

Common questions
Is my relative in the Whittier jail or downtown?
For a Whittier arrest, the city jail on Penn Street is a real possibility — it is a Type I facility with 22 male and 9 female beds, not just a holding room. We check there first, then county custody. It is a two-minute question that changes where you drive.
Do we definitely need a bail bond?

Because Santa Fe Springs contracts its policing to the Whittier Police Department. Whittier officers handle it, and the Whittier jail may be where the person is held.
